Novarum DX, an Edinburgh-headquartered technology company which has developed a smart new way to read and share diagnostic test results using nothing more than your smartphone, is celebrating a breakthrough into seven figure sales territory.
A joint-venture company, established in 2012 between a leading expert in immunoassay development and manufacturing services for the global diagnostics market, and Albagaia, a specialist in environmental testing, Novarum DX has more than doubled both its sales and its headcount in the last twelve months.
The company expects to record “reasonably significant profit” this year according to Managing Director, Dr Neil Polwart. Novarum DX exports three-quarters of its leading-edge technology overseas, with the USA a current principal market.
Dr Polwart’s team, which comprises of specialists in medical device development, diagnostics, smartphone technology, Federal Drug Administration (FDA) compliance and software development, were mostly recruited via leading IT recruitment specialists 9-20 Recruitment.
“Our smartphone-based app can be developed to read any lateral flow test,” stated Dr Polwart. “This means that users of our app are able to provide an accurate reading of the test result, one that does not depend on an often unreliable visual assessment by the user. The results are then sent using the phone’s connectivity to a secure database, accessible by identified users such as doctors, nurses or patients themselves. By doing this, we are eliminating error and minimising repeat testing.”
“Our patent allows us to read any lateral flow test without additional hardware having to be attached to the smartphone; the technique currently used by our US competitors”, said Dr Polwart.
“Our business came into existence following a Scottish Enterprise-funded feasibility project over three years ago, and we now have a leading-edge market position which I hope we can exploit into many new markets, including HIV and malaria testing and tracking.”
“Our highly-talented team, nine of whom were located by 9-20 Recruitment, hail from across the globe, including our home country of Scotland, and in my view it is as a direct result of their collective brain-power and enormous hard work which has permitted us to make the huge progress we have to date”.
