Andrew Murray
Senior Consultant- Technology
Where did it all begin?
I went to University in Gloucester to study Strength and Conditioning before moving to the big smoke (London) where I began my recruitment career. I started off as a graduate resourcer for 6 months and was then promoted to a consultant!
I then moved to another recruitment agency in London, and after 4 months, I decided to move back up to Scotland and work in the business’s new offices in the heart of Glasgow. I was promoted quite quickly from consultant up to principle consultant.
An opportunity came up at Nine Twenty and I jumped at the chance to join their technology recruitment team because by this point, I had about four year experience under my belt!
What industries do you recruit for and what type of candidates are you looking for?
I have always worked with technology recruitment and mainly with financial clients, meaning I have dealt with a lot of major investment banks both in London and Glasgow. I have worked a lot of international roles with financial clients for example in New York, Australia, Singapore and China. This is something I really enjoy because it’s always good to grow my market internationally.
I also have experience in working with smaller start-up companies, telecoms and social media business’s, all of which help to extend my network.
The type of roles I recruit for vary quite a bit. I started off being solely focussed towards Microsoft stack as I worked a Microsoft desk with my first company but progressed to a broader spectrum of IT roles.
These days I look after anything in the development space, and I find there are a lot of roles in Java, C++, Python and web and open source technologies. I also like to focus on a lot of niche skillsets, for example cloud technologies functional programming languages and architecture roles, so if you have experience in any of these, give me a shout!
I have to say the most recurring roles that I see coming up in Scotland are Java developers as it is always difficult to find candidates that are qualified or have enough experience for these roles. This is definitely the most competitive market I would say, large finance companies are really on the hunt for Java Developers and everyone is getting snapped up very quickly.
I don’t like to limit myself to roles that’s why I would say I am relatively spread out. My area of expertise is probably between mid-senior roles but having said that I really enjoy working in the graduate market for some of my clients.
Having a strong relationship with my client and candidates allows me to know my market really well and I have the ability to open up to other areas of recruitment.
